Former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan was brought to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Tuesday for a follow-up eye treatment, medical officials confirmed. The procedure involved a second dose of an anti-VEGF intravitreal injection to address an underlying eye condition affecting his vision.
According to a PIMS physician, Mr Khan underwent thorough pre-procedure assessments by a board of specialists, including a consultant cardiologist who conducted an echocardiogram and ECG, both reported as normal, and a consultant physician.
The injection was administered under standard monitoring and precautionary protocols by a consultant ophthalmologist and a consultant vitreo-retinal surgeon from PIMS and Al-Shifa Eye Hospital. The treatment was performed as a day-care procedure, after which Khan was discharged with instructions for post-operative care and follow-up advice.
Clinical Stability and Future Treatment Plan
Hospital officials described Mr Khan as “clinically stable” throughout the process. The procedure, designed to slow or stop vision loss by targeting abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina, was completed successfully under microscopic guidance.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said a third injection is expected to be administered on March 24, as recommended by specialist physicians overseeing his care. Chaudhry reiterated that the government arranged the treatment under strict security and in compliance with legal and humanitarian requirements.
PTI’s Objections Over Secrecy and Access
The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has objected to the way medical procedures were carried out, accusing authorities of withholding information and lacking transparency. PTI leaders have criticised the timing and secrecy around Mr Khan’s hospital visits, insisting that such matters should be handled openly and advocating for treatment at Shifa International Hospital with access for his personal doctors and family.
PTI officials also reposted footage of a convoy late at night, claiming it showed Khan’s transfer. The party’s chairman said they were informed only after the procedure and reiterated demands for greater independence in his medical care.
Context: Eye Condition and Ongoing Health Concerns
Earlier medical reports indicate that Mr. Khan was diagnosed with a blockage in the central retinal vein of his right eye, a condition that can lead to decreased vision without timely treatment. Specialist examinations conducted earlier this month at Adiala Jail and PIMS showed signs of partial vision loss and macular swelling, which doctors said had shown some improvement but still required follow-up injections.
The eye condition and treatment have become part of a broader political debate, with PTI and opposition figures raising concerns about access to independent medical care. Government authorities maintain that Mr Khan is being provided with appropriate treatment according to medical protocols.
